I have started reading “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry. I am on page 65. So far, they introduced three characters. Ruth Younger, Walter Lee Younger, and Travis Younger.
How Ms. Hansberry described the house and position in which the family is in, it seems like they aren’t wealthy. They may not even be in the middle class. On page 52, it says, “Travis: [Ruth] won’t give me fifty cents. Walter: Why not? Ruth: ’Cause we don’t have it.” This also explains why “weariness has, in fact, won” in their apartment. The apartment is a rectangle with an entrance at the center of the south wall. It enters into a living and dining room that extends northward until the middle, and ⅔ of the way east. The last ⅓ of it is a “kitchen” the size of a medium walk-in closet. Past the living and dining room, there is a hallway with a bedroom at either side and a bathroom at the end. The apartment layout is shown below.

Up to where I am, Ruth has woken up and made breakfast. Ruth isn’t the happiest person because Walter woke up late. They argue about Ruth’s attitude, then Travis comes out. He calls Walter into the bathroom and goes to eat. As doing so, he mentions how he is supposed to bring 50¢. His mother rejects his request multiple times as Travis keeps asking if Ruth, or his Grandma (whom we don't know the name of yet), or Walter, Travis's dad, would have it. Ruth eventually snaps, and Travis is quiet until Walter comes out. Travis complains about not getting fifty cents from Ruth, so Walter gives it to him. Ruth beams Walter with anger in her eyes. Walter then proceeds to give Travis another fifty cents. This time looking straight into Ruth’s murderous eyes, not giving a glance to Travis. Travis is happy, nonetheless. After Travis leaves, Walter and Ruth argue about Ruth’s thoughts on Walter’s friends. So far that’s what I've read. I will be reading a lot more often.
